This is why we decided to play around with ChatGPT to help create and improve a resume for a theoretical job that we were applying for, in order to see exactly what it could do. So, let’s take a closer look at the process…

Ask ChatGPT To Write A Professional Summary

If you ask ChatGPT to produce a professional summary of the job title that you’re applying for, it will just give you a generic answer from the data that it has access to. 

We asked the AI chatbot to create a professional summary for the position of Executive Assistant to the CEO at Tomorrow Health. The chatbot produced a very general response, considering we also provided a link to the job posting on indeed.com. Here’s the job description.

As you can see, ChatGPT also got the position we were applying for wrong, so we had to go back and ask it to change this before we moved further.

We still weren’t happy with the resulting text, however.

So, what should you do next?

Ask ChatGPT To Be More Specific

Since giving ChatGPT the exact job description didn’t help with creating a resume that we felt would stand out, we needed to tailor it more. 

This is why we asked the AI chatbot to write an MBA-style summary for an executive assistant position, because it is the writing style that big businesses use to separate the wheat from the chaff, and will make our resume look and sound more professional. 

In the MBA-style summary, we also wanted ChatGPT to list the five main duties and responsibilities of an executive assistant to the CEO, with bullet points and metrics. So, we asked for this to be added, and this is the result:

But even this wasn’t enough for us, so we decided to get ChatGPT to go even further by elaborating on one of the bullet points that it gave us:

We also wanted ChatGPT to include accomplishments from previous jobs that would highlight the fact that we had saved the company time and money, and this was the result:

Next, we wanted to add a Certifications and Awards section to our resume in order to highlight our unique strengths to our potential boss.

So, we asked ChatGPT to do this:

If you’re an executive assistant, as in our example, then there are certain digital tools that you will use daily to help streamline your administrative duties. 

The same can be said for just about any other office worker though, including medical coding managers, senior human resources assistants, facilities managers, data entry specialists, and call center managers, so depending on your position, ask ChatGPT to add them to your resume.

For our example, we asked the AI chatbot to provide us with the names of the top five software systems that a good executive assistant will have used in their career, as well as the top 10 most important areas of expertise for this position. 

We did this, so that we could add a Technological Skills and Expertise section to our resume:

It should also be noted that this AI chatbot learns more about you the more that you converse with it! ChatGPT will quickly update your resume with any addition and/or deletion prompts that you give it. And you can repeat this process for each job that you want to include on your resume.

All you need to do is ask ChatGPT to revise the resume by adding something that you’ve forgotten about, or by deleting anything that you don’t like or isn’t relevant to either the job description or your experience. 

And this is something that you’ll definitely need to keep an eye on during the process! ChatGPT often decides to make things up completely, not just simply embellish the prompts.

Because of this, you want to make sure that you don’t just use the first draft that it gives you. Not only would that basically be cheating, but any potential boss or HR manager with an eagle eye will probably flag up your resume as not being genuine. 

You should also keep in mind that including total fabrications about your education and career on your resume isn’t a great idea, no matter how tempting it may be, or how good it might look on paper.

Nobody likes a liar, and it’s not the best way to try getting an interview.

Finally, when you have a polished resume that you’re happy with, what should you do next? Well, before you put your resume in an envelope and run to the mailbox, you could also get ChatGPT to help you write a suitable cover letter.

We asked the AI chatbot to write a one-page cover letter for the executive assistant position we were applying for, using all of the information that it had gathered during the resume drafting process, and this was the result: 

Overall, ChatGPT gave us a decent cover letter to work with, although it would be best for you to add some of your own flair to this draft. Find a unique angle and stand out from the crowd.


Final Thoughts

ChatGPT is definitely an AI tool that you can use to great effect when it comes to the writing process, especially if you find it difficult to find the right words to use. 

During our research for this article, the AI chatbot’s servers became overwhelmed a couple of times, and we were given an error that it was ‘at capacity’. This is due to the fact that too many people were looking for answers to their questions at the same time.

This is something you need to consider if you want to use ChatGPT to help you with your resume. So, don’t leave it until the last minute, especially if sending your resume in for the job that you want has a deadline.

However, when it comes to applying for a new job, you want to make sure that your resume stands out from the crowd so that you can get your foot in the door, and wow your potential boss at the interview by giving a great impression.
