Since ChatGPT was released to the masses back in November of 2022, many people have been waiting for its developer, OpenAI, to make the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot even more accessible, so that you can use it from wherever you are when you’re on the go.

So, you may be wondering, is there a ChatGPT app? We’re all using it on our phones anyway!

Well, thankfully, the emerging tech company has been listening to user feedback, and it has just recently launched an official app for ChatGPT. However, it’s not yet available on all platforms.

Continue reading this blog to find out how well the now available and official app works, and what OpenAI has in store for its mobile users.

Is There A ChatGPT App?

If you’re already a fan of ChatGPT and you have an iPhone, then we have some great news. You now have the ability of using the AI chatbot on the go by using the newly released ChatGPT app for iOS.

iOS users can find it on the App Store here.

If you’re already a fan of ChatGPT and you have an iPhone, then we have some great news. You now have the ability of using the AI chatbot on the go by using the newly released ChatGPT app for iOS.

However, if you’re an Android user, then you’ll have to keep waiting for a while. But don’t despair — OpenAI has news for you too, which we’ll share at the end of this post.

The ChatGPT app for iOS is free, and it will even sync your history across all of your devices, making it even easier to use.

Once you login, you can access whatever version of ChatGPT you’re using, and if you have the plus subscription, you have access to plugins, Bing search, etc.

And for those who love chatting to their phones instead of typing, the ChatGPT app for iOS has Whisper integrated, which enables you to input prompts by using your voice. Whisper is OpenAI’s own open-source speech recognition system, so it will only get better as more people begin to use it.

ChatGPT App Features

The ChatGPT app features everything that you would expect, just like when you use it on your computer — and without ads (at the moment anyway), which is a bonus.

App Store reviewers are raving about the app, and how its user interface is cleaner and uncluttered, when compared to using the desktop version of ChatGPT.

OpenAI has also made the app compatible with iOS’s Voiceover feature, making the accessibility experience even better for iPhone users. This means that you will get a voiceover of the text generated from your ChatGPT prompts.

It has been noted by some users that the app can make certain iPhones run hot when in use, but this is nothing new with more advanced apps. You can always shut down apps that are running in the background the make the experience more smooth — and less hot!

Imposter Syndrome

It took a while for OpenAI to actually release the new ChatGPT for iOS app, considering it released the web version to the public in November of last year. The result of the delay in the app’s release has meant that there are many fake apps around that are all claiming to be “powered by ChatGPT”, but clearly aren’t.

It took a while for OpenAI to actually release the new ChatGPT for iOS app, considering it released the web version to the public in November of last year. The result of the delay in the app’s release has meant that there are many fake apps around that are all claiming to be “powered by ChatGPT”, but clearly aren’t.

For instance, there is an app in the Google Play store called Genie that claims to be “a revolutionary AI chatbot powered by ChatGPT & GPT-4, GPT-3… From writing stories, poems, song lyrics, and social media posts to answering any question you have, Genie can do it all!”

However, it is not an official OpenAI app, so you should be aware of what you download, no matter how many stars it gets on the reviews.

It is possible to use ChatGPT in some apps though, since OpenAI released a public application programming interface, or API, for the chatbot back in March of this year. What this means is that ChatGPT’s AI language model can now be integrated into apps and other services.

For instance, social media app Snapchat is using ChatGPT for its My AI direct messaging feature, while Instacart is using the AI chatbot to let customers have conversations about food or get suggestions for healthier shopping.

And if you have a Discord account, and use the app on your Android phone, then it is possible to use ChatGPT on its own via the Discord app instead.

Unfortunately though, there’s a bit of a problem now when it comes to fake ChatGPT apps, making it problematic and challenging to discern between the real OpenAI app and the hundreds of fake ones that make money from charging for subscriptions and spammy advertising.

So, unless you’re using ChatGPT through Discord, or an approved app like Snapchat and Instacart, then it’s probably not worth the download until OpenAI itself issues a list of approved third-party services that utilize the API.

What About ChatGPT For Android?

OpenAI is currently working on the ChatGPT app to soon be available in the Google Play store. On the OpenAI website, it states: “Android users, you’re next! ChatGPT will be coming to your devices soon.” So, you shouldn’t have to wait too long to be able to use the AI chatbot when you’re on the go with your Android smartphone.

But if your patience is running thin, you could have a go at using some of the apps that are now available in the Google Play store. Just make sure that you use your discernment, and don’t sign up for anything that isn’t official. Plus, you could always use the browser on your computer until the official app is released soon.

Conclusion

ChatGPT has given some humans a new boost in their writing productivity, spreadsheet acumen, and programming power, as well as a way to communicate with the new emerging artificial intelligence. So, it’s fair to say that this AI-powered chatbot has already started to revolutionize the way we learn and interact with words.
